When I began my little venture, I hadn’t the time or money to cook and bake loads of dishes and photograph them; nor did I want to go online and use someone else’s photos to illustrate my recipes. Therefore, I decided to utilise another old love – my painting hobby – and use my own artwork for the illustrations.
I appreciate this doesn’t give you a perfect picture of the end result in the traditional way, such photos are often edited to look nice (you’d be astounded at the trickery involved). I felt that using creating my own illustrations provided an uniqueness to my books. It also doesn’t leave you feeling deflated when your results don’t match the unrealistically perfect photographs in the book.
I’ve always loved painting, especially using watercolours. You naturally incur a little artistic licence – ultimately watercolour paintings are never going to be mistaken for photos, so embrace the freedom this gives you.
One of my favourite paintings is a watering can with roses and ivy. Yes, sorry, I’m an old romantic at heart!
So, when writing the book I had to think of a cover picture. I played with numerous different ideas, then the ‘Farmhouse Kitchen’ title for the series spawned the kitchen scene.
Once I’d painted my virtual kitchen, the food followed. This was harder – until I stopped trying to be too stylised or perfect. The aim was to demonstrate what the recipe produces. This one, for example, is for my Rhubarb and Ginger Jam recipe. 
I really hope you like my little pictures, and forgive any imperfections. Of course it’s the recipes that are most important, the illustrations are just a little bit of fun and a pop of colour. I hope that you enjoy my books, and have lots of fun cooking my simple-to-follow recipes.
